MENA Newswire News Desk: Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and President of COP29, has reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the implementation of the UAE Consensus, a historic climate agreement established during COP28. In his remarks at COP29’s opening session, Babayev emphasized collaboration with the COP28 Presidency, led by Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology.

Expressing gratitude to Dr. Al Jaber for his ongoing cooperation, Babayev remarked, “It is an honour to take the gavel from you as we build on the UAE Consensus together.” Babayev outlined COP29’s goals to promote inclusivity, transparency, and cooperation among parties, positioning the conference as a platform to enhance global sustainability efforts and address climate resilience.

Babayev highlighted the urgent need to establish a new, equitable climate finance target, emphasizing that the new framework should reflect the needs of the most vulnerable countries, including least developed nations, small island states, and developing countries. He acknowledged that addressing these aspirations is essential for meaningful progress, urging wealthier nations to commit to financial support that enables a more resilient and equitable global response to climate challenges.

Acknowledging the inherent challenges in climate negotiations, Babayev encouraged all parties to engage fully in collaborative and constructive dialogues. He called for a unified approach, stressing that progress relies on inclusive cooperation and shared commitments to empower communities already grappling with the impacts of climate change.

Additionally, Babayev stressed COP29’s determination to deliver an ambitious package of climate solutions that are actionable and measurable. He noted that a key goal for the conference is to push for the first global outcome on the UAE Consensus, reinforcing commitments to climate finance mobilization and realistic, impactful solutions. This outcome is intended to solidify global efforts toward meeting climate objectives that are essential for future generations.

Babayev’s opening remarks set a clear agenda for COP29, highlighting the significance of continued collaboration across borders and sectors. With the momentum of the UAE Consensus, COP29 aims to establish comprehensive strategies that align with both immediate and long-term climate objectives.
